Viva Las Vegas 2013 Photos

This past weekend was the annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend and Car Show. Since I was in town for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing event out at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, I thought I would cruise over to the show on Friday for the festivities. Here are some photos and notes from VLV.

VLV from The Orleans Casino

I had not been to VLV since 2006 and the event has grown quite a bit since then. The car show is much larger and the entire event is huge. I did not have a chance to even get over there on Saturday for the main car show and music acts, but I had a lot of fun seeing the sights on Friday.

VLV 16 attracted quite a crowd to The Orleans Casino for four days. It celebrates everything about the cultures of the 1950-60s. There is live music until the wee hours of the morning, with groups from all over the country playing oldies, rockabilly and classic rock. The ballrooms held dance lessons, pin-up contests, and seminars showing women how to do vintage inspired hair and makeup.

The rules for the car show are simple: pre-1963 American cars with period correct styling or customization. There were many traditional rods with primered paint and flat head engines, plus plenty of early 50's Fords with white walls and candy paint.

The show attracts an estimated 700 cars and 20,000 people to Las Vegas over Easter weekend each year.

My favorite part of the weekend was the classic car show, but there was plenty of other activities to entertain attendees during the weekend. A daily pool party, dance lessons, burlesque shows and live music take place from midday to the early morning. There were plenty of vendors on hand selling vintage clothing and accessories in the vendor rooms.
In the main ballroom there was live music every night. I was able to check out a few of the bands on Friday night.

It was a fun afternoon at Viva Las Vegas. Hopefully, next year I will have time to check out more of the events. Check back later in the week for more video from the VLV car show.
