2017 Goodguys Meguiar's Del Mar Nationals Photos and Video Highlights

This past weekend, the California Car Cover Crew headed down the 5 freeway for our annual stop at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We always look forward to this weekend in sunny San Diego County. The Goodguys Meguiar's Del Mar Nationals car show attracts over 2,000 customs, classics and hot rods to the fairgrounds for three days of cruising, showing and auto-crossing. We had a great time catching up with our customers from the local area. Here are some photos from our weekend in Del Mar.

The California Car Cover pop-up shop showcases not just our covers, but plenty of other collectibles and car care products.

The cacklefest always attracts a crowd of people to watch some nostalgia dragsters fired up.

Saturday features special parking areas for a variety of vehicle styles. This is a photo of the '32 parking.

The main drag at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is meant for cruising. All day Saturday you would find customs and classics driving around the fairgrounds.

Sunday morning, the marque award winners are gathered around the main fountain outside of the horse track. Some of the finest cars from the show were all on display.

Sunday afternoon, all award winners are brought in front of the crowd to collect their awards from the weekend.

Thank you to everyone that stopped by the California Car Cover booth over the weekend. We had a great time visiting with our friends and customers. Check back in a few weeks for coverage of our upcoming EURO17 European Car Show and 1st ever California Car Cover Poker Run.

#EURO17 is Less Than a Month Away

On Saturday, April 15th is the 6th Annual European Car Show hosted by California Car Cover and dub-Nation. We are looking forward to another large crowd of European car owners to get together to raise some money for Rancho San Antonio.

This will be the 3rd year that we host the event at Rancho San Antonio. This campus in Chatsworth is an excellent venue for our attendees. With plenty of grass parking and shade, everyone really enjoys the setting. Last year, we were able to raise $2600 for RSA and look to improve upon that in 2017.

Registration for the show opened last week. Tickets can be purchased on the Eventbrite page for the event. Tickets are only needed per vehicle. Additional passengers and spectators do not need to purchase tickets. General admission is free and there is plenty of street parking for spectators.

Additional show details can be found on the European Car Show Facebook Page or by following @eurocarshow.us on Instagram.

We look forward to seeing everyone on April 15th.

1965 Oldsmobile 442 from our Spring Car Care Guide

Our second spring car care guide features a 1965 Oldsmobile 442 on the cover. One of our local customers, Michael Branton, owns this clean 442. Michael owns a nice collection of muscle cars and we have been trying to shoot one of them for a California Car Cover catalog cover for a long time. Glad we were finally able to set aside some time to shoot this 442.

We asked Michael a few questions about his Oldsmobile and his love of muscle cars.

CCC: How did you acquire this Olds 442?

MB: I acquired the 65 Olds 442 about 4 years ago in early 2013 from a gentlemen in Canyon Lake, CA.  I met him at the Temecula Rod Run car show and we became friends over the years.  When he put the car up for sale, we negotiated the deal and I purchased the car.

CCC: What type of condition was it in compared to today?

MB: The 65 Olds 442 was in great shape, extremely straight, clean and all there.  I had it repainted in its original Target Red color in 2015.  Although its not all stock it is all Oldsmobile.  It has a 1970 455 W30 engine with the big cam, 200R4 automatic overdrive trans, 3.55 gears with working A/C.  It rides down the highway effortlessly.  Out of all the GM A-Bodies, I think the Olds has the best ride.

The 1965 Oldsmobile is finished in the factory color Target Red. Under the hood is a 1970 Olds 455 W30 engine topped with a Quick Fuel carburetor. The 442 also has a 200R transmission and Golden West suspension upgrades.

CCC: What other vehicles are in your collection?

MB: I have a ’65 Mustang Fastback A-code car with a 289 and 4 speed, a ’66 Chevelle 300 Deluxe post car with a 427 engine and 4 speed, a ’68 Chevelle SS396 real deal 138 car, the first muscle car I ever purchased which is a ’67 Olds 442 with 455 and TH400, a ’66 Pontiac GTO 389 Tri-Power, 4 speed, factory AC car, ’64 Pontiac GTO 389 Tri-Power, 4 speed car and my last acquisition which was a ’63 Tempest Convertible 326, 3 speed and independent rear.  I recently sold a ’67 Camaro RS/SS.

CCC: Any new projects in the works or a car you are looking for?

MB: My 1965 Ford Mustang fastback, I have the engine and trans out of the car for rebuild.  Trying to decide should I go resto mod or rebuild to stock.  Also looking for a Buick GS, then I will have at least one example of all the GM A-body cars.

CCC: What would be the dream car to add to your garage?

MB: 66 Olds 442 W30, in ’66 the factory only made 54 W30 cars all in June of 1966.

California Car Cover Visits the Petersen Museum

The California Car Cover Crew recently took a trip to the Petersen Museum to check out the latest exhibits. The world renowned museum has been given much praise since its grand renovation. If you have not been down to the Miracle Mile recently, it's definitely worth a trip.

Starting in 2017, California Car Cover is now the Official Car Cover Provider of the Petersen Museum. We are glad to partner with the museum to preserve and protect their historic and rare automobiles down in the vault and while traveling to concours events.

One of the most popular and visually stunning exhibits at the museum is the Precious Metal display within the Bruce Meyer Family Gallery. Ultra rare race cars, sports cars and classics all finished in silver make this one of the most Instagram worthy spots in the Petersen Museum.

We sat down with Michael Bodell, Deputy Director of the Petersen Museum, to discuss the renovation and what’s in store in 2017.
CCC: What has been attendee response to the museum thus far?

MB: The response to the renovation has been excellent. We have exceeded all of our visitation goals and 97% of our visitors would visit a second time.

CCC: What is your favorite car(s) on display at the Petersen Museum?

MB: My favorite car is a Jaguar C-type, and the closest car we have to that in the museum is our 1956 XKSS, formerly owned by Steve McQueen. Cars from that era, especially Jags represent a time when race cars had to be on the road in order for the teams to compete and they are just works of art.

CCC: Any interesting stories that our customers might enjoy knowing about the museum’s collection?

MB: One of my favorite stories is actually of the Steve McQueen Jaguar. During Steve’s ownership of the 1956 XKSS, the police chief of Los Angeles has a free steak dinner to any officer that could give Steve a speeding ticket. Being that the XKSS was essentially a glorified race car and Steve drove it like that, no officer ever caught him and he remained the king of cool!

The Petersen Museum is not just a showplace for amazing cars, but it is also about educating the visit. Featuring display include Alternative Power, which highlights alternative fuel vehicles throughout the ages. Other displays include an active Art Center College of Design studio and the Cars Mechanical Institute for the younger auto enthusiasts

CCC: What new exhibits or events are you looking forward to this spring or summer (that you are allowed to share with us)?

MB: We’re opening Harley vs. Indian in early March and at the end of April, we’ll be opening 70 years of Ferrari. Both will be blockbuster exhibitions.

CCC: How many cars are typically on display in the museum compared to being stored in the Vault?

MB: It’s normally a 50/50 split. We have about 140 vehicles on display and another 140 in the Vault.

CCC: Why did you partner with California Car Cover as the Official Car Cover Provider of the Petersen Museum?

MB: With so many valuable vehicles in the collection, the museum was looking for a quality car cover partner, and that partner was California Car Cover.  Almost every day the museum receives new vehicles and is rotating vehicles in and out of storage. It’s so important to have good cover so the cars stay in the best possible condition when they’re being stored or transported.

You cannot have a complete automotive museum without some hot rods. The Petersen Museum hosts a number of historic hot rods, including a number of past AMBR award winners.

Rare and famed two wheelers are also on display at the Petersen Museum.

Check out the rotating display of vintage concept cars from the Petersen Museum Vault.
Since the museum is so close to Hollywood, there has to be space to display some of the most memorable automobiles from cinema history.

The last stop on your visit to the Petersen Museum is the featured exhibit hall. This space is host to the museum's rotating displays throughout the year. On our recent trip, the Art of Bugatti collection was featured. It displayed not just a large group of stunning Bugatti automobiles, but incredible examples of Bugatti design from furniture to art.

Check out the Petersen Museum website to see the latest and upcoming exhibits. If you live in the SoCal area, you can always drive over on a Sunday morning for their monthly Breakfast Club Drive-In Shows.

In case you did not receive the March California Car Cover catalog in the mail, here is the cover image. Thank you to our friends at the Petersen Museum for their assistance with the photo shoot.
